BEIJING, June 22 (Xinhua) -- China's top market regulator said on Monday that it has launched a multi-agency joint task force to investigate formamide-related safety issues in infant diapers, after relevant media coverage raised public concern over the chemical's potential health risks.
The State Administration for Market Regulation, together with the Ministry of Industry and Information Technology, the National Health Commission, and the National Disease Control and Prevention Administration, has set up the joint task force to verify the facts concerning the presence of formamide in diapers, the regulator said in a statement.
The team will handle any violations in accordance with the law and release findings in a timely manner, the statement added.
Formamide, a synthetic compound used in some industrial processes, has been classified as a reproductive toxicant in certain jurisdictions. ■
