COLOMBO, June 16 (Xinhua) -- Sri Lanka's cabinet has approved a proposal to seek international investors for an industrial and container-related infrastructure development project on more than 108 acres of state land in the southern district of Hambantota, the Department of Government Information said in a statement on Tuesday.

The land will be leased for 50 years through an international competitive bidding process, according to the statement.

The department said the land, vested with the Urban Development Authority, has not been put to optimal use and lies within the central commercial zone of the greater Hambantota development plan.

The greater Hambantota development plan is an Urban Development Authority framework for guiding the southern district's growth around port-linked industry, logistics, transport infrastructure and new urban centers.

Earlier planning documents identified the wider Hambantota area as a potential industrial and logistics hub centered on the international seaport.
