ANKARA, June 15 (Xinhua) -- Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan said on Monday the newly reached memorandum of understanding (MoU) between the United States and Iran has ended the "senseless" U.S.-Israeli war on Iran.

Erdogan made the remarks during his address to the nation following a weekly cabinet meeting.

"Last night, a very important step was taken in the war that began on Feb. 28 with the instigation and provocations of Israel. It was announced that an agreement had been reached to end the conflicts between America and Iran," he said.

Erdogan said he believes that the "senseless war," which cost lives, including innocent children, "is now closed."

He added that Türkiye hopes the agreement will "fully open the way toward the establishment of lasting peace and stability in our region."

Iran and the United States finalized an MoU on Sunday, aiming to end the war. Further negotiations over the Iran nuclear issue and the removal of U.S. sanctions on Tehran between the two sides for a final agreement are expected to begin after the signing of the MoU in Geneva on Friday.
