MALE, June 15 (Xinhua) -- The Maldivian government aims to plant a million trees in 2026 under its 5 million tree planting program, Minister of Climate Change, Environment and Energy Ali Shareef said on Monday.
Addressing an event marking World Environment Day, Shareef said the program seeks to restore endangered tree species and expand green cover across the Maldives. He added that 1.6 million trees had already been planted under the initiative.
Minister of Foreign Affairs Iruthisham Adam said environmental protection remained a key pillar of the Maldives' foreign policy.
She said the country was already experiencing the effects of climate change and that sustainable environmental protection was essential to safeguard people's lives, economy and culture. ■
