MEXICO CITY, May 26 (Xinhua) -- Mexican anti-crime operations have dealt "significant" blows to criminal organizations in the northwestern state of Sonora and the southeastern state of Chiapas, a government official said Tuesday.
Mexico's Secretary of Security and Citizen Protection Omar Garcia Harfuch wrote on X that military intelligence work by the National Defense Ministry, in conjunction with the Criminal Investigation Agency of the Attorney General's Office and other security agencies, resulted in two significant operations against organized crime.
As part of the operations, authorities arrested a nephew of notorious Mexican drug lord Joaquin Guzman Loera, alias "El Chapo," who led the Sinaloa Cartel until his extradition to the United States in 2017, where he was tried and remains in prison.
Identified only as Isai "N," El Chapo's nephew was arrested in Nogales, Sonora, and faces extradition orders.
According to Garcia, authorities also raided a property in Tapachula, Chiapas, that led to the confiscation of 687 kilograms of cocaine, 151 firearms, 363 magazines and 18 grenades.
These actions reflect Mexico's ongoing coordination to apprehend priority targets and weaken the operational capabilities of criminal groups, he said. ■
