DAR ES SALAAM, May 19 (Xinhua) -- Tanzania's border security has remained stable during the ongoing financial year despite a range of regional security challenges, Minister for Defense and National Service Rhimo Nyansaho said on Tuesday.

Presenting his ministry's budget proposals for the 2026/2027 financial year in the parliament in the capital, Dodoma, Nyansaho said Tanzania's defense and security organs have continued to take firm measures to safeguard the country's borders, which stretch about 5,923 kilometers across land, airspace and territorial waters.

"There were no incidents indicating a breach of peace between Tanzania and its neighboring countries during the period under review," the minister said.

However, he noted several security challenges, including the destruction of border markers, poor or damaged patrol roads, livestock smuggling, and insecurity linked to internal conflicts in neighboring countries.

He said Tanzania's military had strengthened border patrols and enhanced the operational capacity of troops through improved equipment and logistics.

Nyansaho added that Tanzania has continued to address border disputes with neighboring countries through diplomatic channels, including talks with Malawi over Lake Nyasa and consultations with Uganda over border demarcation issues.
