WELLINGTON, May 14 (Xinhua) -- The Niue Assembly has re-elected incumbent Prime Minister Dalton Tagelagi for a new term.
Tagelagi secured his re-election on Wednesday local time in a vote by the newly-formed Niue Assembly following the May 2 general election.
Under the South Pacific island nation's political system, the prime minister is chosen by a secret ballot among the 20 members of the assembly following the general election.
New Zealand Prime Minister Christopher Luxon on Thursday offered his congratulations to Tagelagi on his reappointment as prime minister, noting he looks forward to "growing the unique partnership we already have."
Niue is self-governing in free association with New Zealand, which provides support in areas such as foreign affairs and defense upon request by the Niue government. ■
