SEOUL, May 14 (Xinhua) -- South Korea's export of information and communications technology (ICT) products topped 40 billion U.S. dollars for a second successive month, thanks to soaring semiconductor demand, government data showed Thursday.
ICT product shipments spiked 125.9 percent from a year earlier to 42.71 billion dollars in April, after posting a record high of 43.51 billion dollars in the prior month, according to the Ministry of Trade, Industry and Resources.
ICT exports have risen for a 15th consecutive month since February 2025.
Chip exports skyrocketed 173.3 percent to 31.91 billion dollars, topping 30 billion dollars for a second straight month amid the global investment in artificial intelligence (AI) infrastructure that led to higher demand and price hikes for memory chips.
Display panel shipments dipped 5.3 percent to 1.44 billion dollars, but mobile phone exports swelled 14.0 percent to 1.36 billion dollars.
Shipments of computers and peripherals soared 430.0 percent to 4.26 billion dollars due to robust demand for solid state drives (SSDs), and communications equipment exports gained 9.9 percent to 220 million dollars.
Imports of ICT products surged 33.3 percent over the year to 16.16 billion dollars in April, sending the trade surplus in the ICT industry to 26.55 billion dollars.
Imports of chips, display panels, mobile phones, computers and communications equipment all recorded a double-digit growth last month. ■
