SAN FRANCISCO, May 12 (Xinhua) -- U.S. President Donald Trump said Tuesday that U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) Commissioner Marty Makary has resigned and Kyle Diamantas will serve as the agency's acting commissioner.

"I want to thank Dr. Marty Makary for having done a great job at the FDA," Trump said in a post on Truth Social. "So much was accomplished under his leadership. He was a hard worker, who was respected by all, and will go on to have an outstanding career in Medicine."

"Kyle Diamantas, a very talented person, will be put in the Acting position," Trump added.

Diamantas has served as the FDA's deputy commissioner for food. According to the FDA, he leads the agency's Human Foods Program, overseeing FDA nutrition and food safety activities.

Makary's departure came after weeks of reported tensions involving senior White House and health officials and scrutiny over several FDA decisions.
