DHAKA, May 7 (Xinhua) -- Bangladesh's trade deficit in the first three quarters of the current fiscal year 2025-26 (July 2025-June 2026) ballooned over 24 percent year on year to 19.17 billion U.S. dollars, according to the latest data released by the Bangladesh Bank.

The central bank data showed that the country's import payment was 51.56 billion dollars, up 4.6 percent in the cited period, while earnings from exports stood at 32.38 billion dollars, down 4.4 percent, during the same period.

Central bank officials said strong remittances from nearly 10 million Bangladeshis living and working abroad helped offset the impact of the trade shortfall.

According to the central bank's data, remittances increased more than 20 percent year on year to 26.21 billion dollars in the July-March period of the current fiscal year.

Bangladesh's trade deficit in the 2024-25 fiscal year from July 2024 to June 2025 dipped by more than 9 percent to over 20 billion dollars year on year.
