HONIARA, May 6 (Xinhua) -- The Solomon Islands' Prime Minister Jeremiah Manele called for unity and calm on Wednesday, one day before parliament will convene to consider a motion of no confidence in him.

Speaking at a press conference, Manele urged Solomon Islanders to continue with their normal daily activities, saying the political process should not disrupt everyday life.

"My preference is for the motion to be debated. I will provide my statement. Then if I see that I don't have the numbers on my side, I will resign," he told reporters.

The National Parliament has said a special sitting is scheduled on Thursday morning to consider the motion of no confidence in the prime minister.

The sitting comes after the Court of Appeal ordered the prime minister to take lawful steps by midday on Tuesday to convene parliament, which must sit on or before May 7.

The special sitting will be open to the public, but parliament has said strict security measures will be in place because of past disorderly and violent incidents.
