MOSCOW/KIEV, May 5 (Xinhua) -- Russia and Ukraine exchanged intensified strikes ahead of Russia's Victory Day parade, with both sides reporting significant attacks on military-related targets.
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky said Ukrainian cruise missiles struck a military-industrial facility in the Russian city of Cheboksary overnight Tuesday. The plant produces relay protection and automation systems and supplies navigation components for Russia's navy, missile, aviation and armored vehicle sectors, he said, describing the strike as a response to Russian attacks and urging Moscow to pursue "real diplomacy."
Meanwhile, Russia's Defense Ministry said its air defense systems intercepted and destroyed 88 Ukrainian drones over multiple regions within five hours on Tuesday. It also said Russian forces struck 148 Ukrainian defense-industrial and energy facilities, as well as military deployment sites.
As the Victory Day parade draws near, Ukraine has stepped up attacks on Russia. The Kremlin announced that enhanced security measures will be in place for this year's parade, and military equipment will not be featured in it "due to Kiev's terrorist activities." ■
