BAGHDAD, May 1 (Xinhua) -- Iraqi Foreign Minister Fuad Hussein on Friday reaffirmed Iraq's support for diplomatic negotiations, emphasizing the need for a final settlement that could help end regional conflicts.

Hussein made the remarks during a phone call with Iranian Foreign Minister Seyed Abbas Araghchi, according to a statement from Iraq's Ministry of Foreign Affairs.

The statement said Araghchi briefed Hussein on recent discussions with the United States conducted through Pakistan. It said he outlined the nature of messages exchanged between Tehran and Washington, including points of agreement and disagreement.

Araghchi also expressed Iran's hope for "positive results" and described steps it had proposed to advance the process, according to the statement.

Hussein, for his part, said prolonged conflict had contributed to instability across the Middle East and noted that Iraq had been among the countries most affected by the continuing hostilities.

Also on Friday, Iran's official IRNA news agency reported that the Islamic Republic had handed the proposal to Pakistan on Thursday evening, without providing further details.
