PHNOM PENH, April 30 (Xinhua) -- The Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) has served as an indispensable platform for Cambodia to advance its national development and amplify its voice on regional and global stages, Cambodian Minister of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation Prak Sokhonn said on Thursday.
In a message to mark the 27th anniversary of Cambodia's accession to ASEAN, Sokhonn, who is also a deputy prime minister, said Cambodia has, among other areas, expanded trade and investment opportunities, strengthened regional connectivity, enhanced supply chain resilience, narrowed development gaps, and advanced science, technology and innovation.
"These efforts have contributed meaningfully to improving the livelihoods of our people and equipping them to be future-proof and future-ready," he said. "At the same time, Cambodia has been an active contributor to ASEAN'S development and integration."
Sokhonn said respect for sovereignty and territorial integrity, the non-use of threat or use of force, and the peaceful settlement of disputes in accordance with international law have enabled ASEAN member states to coexist peacefully and build a region defined by dialogue, cooperation and mutual trust.
"In today's increasingly uncertain and volatile global landscape, these principles are more important than ever," he said. "As a collective family, we must continue to uphold them and choose the path of peace over conflict."
Sokhonn said, looking ahead, Cambodia remains firmly committed to working closely with fellow ASEAN member states to realize the ASEAN Community Vision 2045.
Cambodia joined ASEAN on April 30, 1999. ■
