COLOMBO, April 29 (Xinhua) -- Sri Lanka's cabinet of ministers has approved a proposal to provide electric vehicles and electric motorcycles for police officers, Minister of Public Security and Parliamentary Affairs Ananda Wijepala said on Tuesday.

Wijepala said that 400 electric cars would be supplied to police officers from the rank of assistant superintendent of police to senior deputy inspector general.

The cabinet has also approved to provide electric motorcycles to police officers from the rank of constable to police inspector, Wijepala said.

The minister said the motorcycles would be provided free of customs duties, adding that loan facilities would be arranged through a fund to help officers purchase them.

The government will allocate 86 million rupees (about 269,882 U.S. dollars) for the program, the minister said.
