MADRID, April 25 (Xinhua) -- Real Madrid's Brazilian international defender Eder Militao will miss this summer's World Cup finals after it was revealed he will need an operation on the hamstring injury he suffered in his side's 2-1 win at home to Deportivo Alaves on Tuesday.

Militao was injured while jumping for a header and although the injury wasn't initially thought to be serious, the club confirmed on Thursday that "following tests carried out today on our player Eder Militao by the Real Madrid Medical Services, he has been diagnosed with a muscle injury in the biceps femoris of his left leg."

Although Real Madrid merely said his return to action was "pending the evolution" of the injury, it was expected that he would need around a month to recover, meaning he would miss the rest of the La Liga season, but be available for Brazil in the World Cup.

The news of his operation means the defender will now be sidelined for around four months and could even miss the start of next season.

The 28-year-old has struggled with injury in the last three years, suffering two torn cruciate ligaments and a torn hamstring in December that kept him out of action for almost four months, which he only recovered from at the end of March.
