SOFIA, April 24 (Xinhua) -- Bulgarian customs officers have seized about 363 kg of marijuana worth 3.5 million U.S. dollars at the Lesovo checkpoint at the border with Türkiye, the authorities said on Friday.
The National Customs Agency (NCA) and the Prosecutor's Office said in a joint statement that the illicit drug was discovered on Thursday in a truck with Romanian registration, transporting washing machines from Romania to Türkiye via Bulgaria.
The driver, a Turkish citizen, stated that he had nothing else to declare, but a thorough inspection found that 25 cardboard boxes containing a total of 338 vacuum-sealed bags of marijuana were placed on top of the washing machines.
The driver was arrested, and an investigation is underway, according to the statement. ■
