ACCRA, April 24 (Xinhua) -- The Ghana Statistical Service released a report on Thursday indicating that at least one in three Ghanaian households is at risk of food insecurity.

The Mobile Vulnerability Analysis Mapping Survey - Food Insecurity Vulnerability report on Ghana finds an emerging trend: households with limited education, weak market access, and reliance on small-scale agriculture face the highest risk of food insecurity in the country.

"Food insecurity remains one of the most pressing risks to livelihoods, human development, and economic stability in Ghana. Households have faced a convergence of shocks, including rising food prices, climate variability, and broader economic pressures," Government Statistician Alhassan Iddrisu said during the launch of the report.

He added that the impacts of these shocks on households had not been the same, as they "exposed deep vulnerabilities across regions, livelihoods, and socio-economic groups."

Despite a degree of resilience in food consumption across the population at the national level, the official noted that there is a more concerning reality of vulnerability to food insecurity concentrating and persisting in specific parts of the country, particularly in the northern Savannah belt.

In regions such as North East, Northern, Upper East, and Upper West, Iddrisu said a significant share of households experience poor or borderline food consumption.

"These are not isolated cases. They reflect structural vulnerabilities linked to geography, livelihoods, and access to resources," the official highlighted.

Responding effectively to these challenges, according to him, "requires timely, reliable, and actionable data," urging the government and its development partners to use the report as a baseline to develop practical solutions to the emerging challenges.
