What is education really for? In 1180, Zhu Xi wrote down his answer at Bailudong Academy in east China's Jiangxi Province. Not for exams. Not for a job. Education, he thought, is about how to be a good person. His words in the Bailudong Academy Directives spread across East Asia and are still upheld as mottos in some schools in South Korea and Japan today.
