BUENOS AIRES, April 4 (Xinhua) -- Paraguayan striker Gabriel Avalos scored late as Independiente secured a 1-0 home win over Racing in Argentina's Apertura tournament on Saturday.
Avalos broke the deadlock in the 81st minute with a lunging effort at the far post after Santiago Montiel's cross from the right.
Racing could manage only two shots on target, falling to its fourth league defeat of the season.
The result leaves Independiente eighth in Group A with 17 points, five behind leader Velez Sarsfield. Racing is sixth in Group B with 18 points, eight shy of leader Independiente Rivadavia.
Elsewhere in Argentina's top flight on Saturday, Estudiantes de Rio Cuarto held Aldosivi to a goalless home draw. ■
