RIO DE JANEIRO, April 2 (Xinhua) -- Botafogo has signed Franclim Carvalho as head coach on a contract running until December 2027, the Brazilian club said on Thursday.
The 39-year-old replaces Argentine Martin Anselmi, who was sacked in March after a poor run of results.
Carvalho is well known to Botafogo, having worked as an assistant coach to Artur Jorge in 2024 when the Rio de Janeiro club won both the Copa Libertadores and Brazilian Serie A titles.
"The Portuguese coach returns to Botafogo to write a new chapter in the team's history and in his career," read a statement on the club's official website.
It added that Carvalho would be joined by assistants Luis Felipe and Luis Viegas, fitness coach Fabio Monteiro and goalkeeping coach Ricardo Matos.
Carvalho's only experience as a first-team manager was with the now-defunct Portuguese side Belenenses SAD in 2022. His first match in charge of the two-time Serie A champion will be Saturday's derby against Vasco da Gama.
Botafogo has endured a difficult start to the South American season, failing to progress beyond the Copa Libertadores qualifying phase and losing five of its first seven Brazilian Serie A matches. ■
