DHAKA, April 2 (Xinhua) -- Remittances, one of the key sources of foreign exchange for Bangladesh, soared 14 percent year on year to 3.76 billion U.S. dollars in March, largely buoyed by the Eid al-Fitr festival.
The amount was the highest monthly inflow since the country's independence in 1971, the latest central bank data showed.
Officials attributed the rise to steady growth ahead of the March 21 Muslim Eid festival, when migrant workers tend to send more money to their families.
According to the Bangladesh Bank (BB) data, remittances from Bangladeshis increased 20.3 percent year on year to 26.21 billion dollars in the July-March period of fiscal year 2025-26 (July 2025-June 2026).
Bangladesh recorded its previous highest-ever monthly remittance inflow of 3.30 billion dollars also in March last year, before the same Eid festival.
According to the data, the remittances hit an all-time high of over 30 billion dollars in the fiscal year 2024-25.
As one of the key sources of foreign exchange for the nation, most remittances come from Middle East countries, such as the United Arab Emirates, Saudi Arabia and Kuwait. ■
