YANGON, March 28 (Xinhua) -- The Yangon Bus Service (YBS), the main public bus network in Yangon, has seen passenger numbers rise following the introduction of the odd-even license plate system to reduce fuel consumption, the state-owned daily Global New Light of Myanmar reported on Saturday.
In early March 2026, about 3,400 buses on 132 bus lines served around 1.46 million passengers daily. At present, about 3,500 buses are serving around 1.7 million passengers per day, the report said, citing the Yangon Region Public Transport Committee (YRTC).
According to the YRTC, there are over 5,400 buses, including 5,013 CNG-powered buses and 423 diesel buses, the report said.
Previously, diesel buses had a fuel quota of 20 liters per day. This has now been increased to 40 liters to help them operate according to their assigned routes, it said.
The YRTC also warned that if buses do not run along their designated routes and instead operate as shuttle services, their CNG quota will be cut, it added. ■
