BEIJING, March 25 (Xinhua) -- A Chinese mainland spokesperson said on Wednesday that after China's peaceful reunification, the mainland's strong infrastructure capabilities would provide robust support for upgrading Taiwan's infrastructure.
"Sectors including transportation, energy, agriculture, water conservancy and urban renewal in Taiwan would be reconstructed or upgraded, significantly improving the quality of life for Taiwan compatriots," said Zhu Fenglian, spokesperson for the State Council Taiwan Affairs Office, responding to a media inquiry at a press conference.
Zhu cited a high-speed railway around the island and more rail links between eastern and western Taiwan as examples.
"Cross-strait infrastructure connectivity will gradually become a reality," she added, noting the possibility for both sides of the Taiwan Strait to jointly construct a cross-Strait fast passageway.
"People in Taiwan would then be able to start from the island and travel along the Beijing-Taipei expressway to visit Beijing," Zhu said. "Overall, peaceful reunification will mark a new starting point from which Taiwan's infrastructure and new-type infrastructure will be completely transformed."
Zhu called on Taiwan compatriots to pursue peaceful reunification with the same dedication as they pursue happiness in life, so as to make the homeland more connected, convenient and beautiful. ■
