Myanmar marks World Meteorological Day in Nay Pyi Taw

YANGON, March 24 (Xinhua) -- Myanmar marked the 66th anniversary of World Meteorological Day in Nay Pyi Taw on Monday, the state-owned daily Global New Light of Myanmar reported on Tuesday.

The event was organized by the Department of Meteorology and Hydrology (DMH) under the Ministry of Transport and Communications, the report said.

During the ceremony, Deputy Minister for Transport and Communications U Aung Kyaw Tun delivered the opening address, saying that as natural disasters such as earthquakes, floods, storms and forest fires are increasing all over the world, it is important to protect people's lives and property by monitoring and preparing.

He stressed the importance of regularly monitoring weather and hydrological news to prevent disaster risks.

The deputy minister also emphasized that disaster prevention requires not only government efforts but also public participation, urging all people to cooperate in such activities, the report said.

The theme of World Meteorological Day 2026 is "Observation Today, Protecting Tomorrow."
