VIENTIANE, March 19 (Xinhua) -- Laos' Ministry of Public Security has announced the nationwide phase-out of traditional household registration books, marking a significant step toward a fully digital population management system.

Under the new policy, authorities have officially ceased issuing hard-copy Family Books, which will be replaced by a Certificate of Household Information generated through an electronic registration system, Lao News Agency reported on Thursday.

Previously issued Family Books will remain valid until an official cancellation notice is released.

The ministry added that citizens with Digital ID Cards can use them as official identification for legal transactions and government services.

The ministry has urged all government bodies and relevant sectors to support the transition by simplifying procedures and ensuring smooth implementation.

This reform is part of Laos' broader push toward digital governance, aimed at improving efficiency, transparency, and public access to services.
