YANGON, March 19 (Xinhua) -- Myanmar authorities have seized over 84.3 tons of illegal timber across the country during a week-long operation, the state-owned daily Myanma Alinn reported on Thursday.

From March 9 to 15, the confiscated timber included over 18.4 tons of teak, over 8.4 tons of hardwood and over 57.5 tons of other types of timber in the country's regions, states and Nay Pyi Taw Union Territory, the report said.

During this period, 16 suspects were charged in connection with the cases, and 12 vehicles and machines were also seized, it added.

The country's Forest Department has been cracking down on illegal logging and trade of forest products through various measures, including a community monitoring and reporting system, the report said.
