KUALA LUMPUR, March 16 (Xinhua) -- Malaysia is stepping up efforts to strengthen its domestic technological capabilities in artificial intelligence (AI), semiconductors and digital technology, while building a more robust innovation ecosystem to secure strategic control over technologies critical to the future economy.
Malaysian Science, Technology and Innovation Minister Chang Lih Kang said in a statement on Monday that the ongoing conflict in West Asia highlights the increasingly uncertain global environment.
"In such times, every country must prioritize national resilience, across the economy, energy, technology and supply chains. Malaysia is no exception," he said.
He emphasized the importance of technological sovereignty, noting that countries cannot rely entirely on foreign technology for critical systems involving data, communications, cybersecurity and digital infrastructure.
"Malaysia continues to strengthen domestic capabilities to ensure strategic control over the technologies that underpin our future economy," he said.
Chang also pointed to the impact of geopolitical tensions on the global energy market, urging the expansion of alternative energy sources and an accelerated transition to sustainable energy.
Diversifying the national energy mix, he said, is crucial for both environmental sustainability and long-term energy security.
The minister highlighted that rapid technological advances, particularly in AI, pose new challenges. In conflict situations, technologies such as AI, data analytics and digital media can be misused to spread misinformation. Responsible governance, ethical use, and public awareness are essential to prevent such misuse.
"Malaysia must continue to strengthen national resilience through science, technology and innovation to remain competitive and prepared for future challenges," he added. ■
