WEBUYE, Kenya, March 10 (Xinhua) -- At least 14 people were killed and 16 others injured in a road accident on Monday night in western Kenya, police confirmed on Tuesday.

The accident occurred at approximately 9:45 p.m. local time (1845 GMT) at the Malaha area along the Webuye-Kitale highway.

Initial reports indicate that two motorcyclists collided head-on, killing both riders instantly. As pedestrians gathered at the scene to assist, a truck traveling from Kitale toward the town of Webuye lost control and plowed into the crowd, killing 10 people on the spot.

Four additional victims later succumbed to their injuries in hospital, raising the death toll to 14. The 16 injured remain hospitalized in critical condition.

Road accidents remain a major concern in Kenya, with fatalities exceeding 4,300 annually in recent years despite ongoing safety initiatives by the National Transport and Safety Authority and other stakeholders.
