MELBOURNE, March 8 (Xinhua) -- Mercedes' George Russell laid down an early marker in the 2026 Formula 1 World Championship with victory in the season-opening Australian Grand Prix.

In the first race under F1's sweeping new technical regulations, which place greater emphasis on battery usage and deployment, Russell underlined Mercedes' status as title favorite, leading teammate Kimi Antonelli home in a commanding one-two for the Silver Arrows.

Starting from pole after dominating Saturday's qualifying session, Russell might have expected a straightforward run to the first corner. Instead, Ferrari's Charles Leclerc produced a lightning start, surging from fourth on the grid to seize the lead.

The opening phase offered an intriguing glimpse of the close racing the new regulations may produce. Leclerc and Russell engaged in a tactical duel over when to deploy electrical energy and when to activate overtake and boost modes, swapping positions several times in the early laps.

The race's decisive moment came on lap 11 when a virtual safety car was deployed to clear the stranded Red Bull of Isack Hadjar, who had stopped with an apparent hydraulic failure.

Mercedes reacted instantly, bringing in both Russell and Antonelli. By contrast, Ferrari chose to keep Leclerc and Lewis Hamilton out, prompting Hamilton to question the call over team radio.

Ferrari's hopes of salvaging the situation were dashed on lap 18 when Cadillac's Valtteri Bottas stopped on track, triggering another VSC. With Bottas' car positioned near the pit lane entry, Race Control closed the pit lane to allow it to be cleared, denying Ferrari the chance of a cheap stop.

Leclerc and Hamilton eventually pitted under full racing conditions on laps 25 and 28 respectively, surrendering track position to both Mercedes drivers.

From there, Russell and Antonelli were largely untroubled, cruising home to seal a dominant one-two finish for the German manufacturer.

"I'm feeling incredible. It was a hell of a fight at the beginning. We knew it was going to be challenging," said Russell, who leads the drivers' championship for the first time in his career.

"I got on the grid, saw my battery level had nothing in the tank, made a bad start, and then had some really tight battles with Charles, so I was really glad to cross the finish line.

"Thank you so much to the whole team, because it's been a long time coming to have this car beneath us, and we couldn't have started off in a better way."

Behind the Mercedes pair, Leclerc and Hamilton finished third and fourth for Ferrari, although the Scuderia may face questions over its strategy after failing to pit either driver while running first and second during the initial VSC.

Still, Ferrari could take encouragement from the pace of the SF-26, which appeared to be the fastest car behind the Mercedes and showed formidable performance off the line.

World champion Lando Norris endured a subdued race to finish fifth, some 35 seconds behind Hamilton. The McLaren driver, who won here last year, made two tyre stops but never looked likely to challenge the leaders.

His difficulties were mild compared with those of teammate and home favorite Oscar Piastri, who failed to take the start after crashing on the way to the grid, drawing groans from thousands of Australian fans.

Red Bull's Max Verstappen recovered to sixth after starting 20th following a qualifying crash similar to Piastri's.

Ollie Bearman drove strongly to seventh for Haas, while Racing Bulls rookie Arvid Lindblad enjoyed an impressive debut, finishing eighth after battling both Verstappen and Hamilton in the opening laps.

Gabriel Bortoleto secured points on Audi's Formula 1 debut with ninth place, while Pierre Gasly rounded out the top ten for Alpine.

Notably, the last three drivers to win the season-opening grand prix have all gone on to claim the world title. Russell will be hoping to make it four in a row.

The championship continues next weekend at the Chinese Grand Prix in Shanghai, which will also feature the season's first Sprint event.
