VIENTIANE, March 6 (Xinhua) -- The Lao Women's Union held a ceremony on Friday to mark International Women's Day, observed annually on March 8, highlighting Laos' commitment to protecting women's rights and interests, advancing gender equality, and strengthening the role of women in society.

Addressing the event in the Lao capital Vientiane, Aly Vongnobountham, the union's president, said that the Lao People's Revolutionary Party and the Lao government have established policies and legal frameworks to promote women's development, protect women's rights and interests, and advance gender equality, the local Pasaxon newspaper reported.

Aly also stressed the importance of promoting women into leadership roles, noting that women's participation is vital for national and global development.

As part of the celebration, the union organized seminars aimed at sharing knowledge and experiences related to women's development. Topics included girls' access to education, proper nutrition for women and children, economic empowerment, food and environmental security, and improving women's access to justice.
