TEHRAN, Feb. 26 (Xinhua) -- Iran's border guards seized a batch of illegal arms, ammunition, explosives, and suicide equipment at the country's southeastern border, the official news agency IRNA reported on Thursday.
The traffickers sought to smuggle the cache into the country, but were ambushed by Iranian border guards at the border with Afghanistan in Zabol County, Sistan and Baluchestan province, IRNA quoted Ali-Akbar Javidan, commander of Iran's border police, as saying, without specifying the date of the operation.
He added that the seized items included a suicide vest, 3 kg of explosive materials, three handmade detonators, 200 pellets, 2.5 meters of electrical wire, a rifle, a magazine and 43 bullets.
Earlier this week, Iran's border guards also seized a cache of illicit weapons intended to be smuggled into the country through its northeastern border with Afghanistan.
The arms cache, concealed inside a black plastic bag buried underground, was discovered and seized Sunday night in Taybad County in Khorasan Razavi province following a series of technical and intelligence operations. ■
