JAKARTA, Feb. 25 (Xinhua) -- A total of 143.91 million people, or 50.60 percent of Indonesia's population, are projected to travel during the 2026 Lebaran transportation period, the Ministry of Transportation said in a press release on Wednesday.

The projection is based on a national survey conducted by the ministry's Transportation Policy Agency, according to the press release.

"We urge the public to use public transportation to enhance safety, reduce congestion, and minimize the risk of accidents due to the high mobility during Lebaran," Minister of Transportation Dudy Purwagandhi said.

The ministry estimates that the largest number of homebound travelers will originate from West Java, Jakarta and East Java, while the biggest flows are expected to head to Central Java, East Java and West Java.

Private cars are projected to be the most widely used mode of transportation, accounting for 76.24 million travelers, followed by motorcycles at 24.08 million and buses at 23.34 million.

To anticipate the surge in mobility, the government has prepared supporting transport facilities and infrastructure across land, sea, air and railway sectors, and coordinated traffic management measures with relevant authorities, the ministry said.
