KABUL, Feb. 25 (Xinhua) -- Police in western Afghanistan's Nimroz province thwarted attempts to smuggle illegal drugs and arrested two smugglers on Tuesday, provincial police spokesman Mawlawi Gul Mohammad Qudrat said Wednesday.
The counter-narcotics police discovered 71 kg of illegal drug of opium poppy type and took into custody two individuals during the checking of vehicles on a road linking the provincial capital Zaranj to Dilaram district the other day, the official added.
Both the alleged drug traffickers would be handed over to the judiciary after preliminary investigation, the official further said.
Earlier, in similar operations, police discovered 41 kg of illegal drugs and arrested two individuals on charges of involvement in the illegal business in the northern Takhar province on Monday. ■
