JERUSALEM, Feb. 12 (Xinhua) -- The Israeli Navy carried out a large-scale drill to safeguard Israel's strategic and economic waters in the Mediterranean Sea, state-run Kan TV News reported Thursday.
The drill, which concluded Tuesday night, was designed to prepare for the defense of strategic assets such as gas rigs and ports, with participation from submarines, Shayetet 13 special forces, missile ships, and aircraft, the report said.
Military sources told Kan that the exercise addressed various threats, including infiltration attempts, damage to critical infrastructure, the misuse of civilian vessels for terrorism, and long-term strategic risks from hostile countries and organizations.
The infiltration exercise involved small yachts, merchant ships, vessel inspections, interrogations, and the operation of a comprehensive intelligence network. ■
