WASHINGTON, Feb. 5 (Xinhua) -- The Donald Trump administration on Thursday launched a new website in an attempt to lower prescription drug prices in the country.

"Through the website, patients will be able to access large discounts on many of the most popular and highest-priced medicines in the country, paying prices in line with the lowest paid by other developed nations (known as the most-favored-nation, or MFN, price)," the White House said in a fact sheet.

The new website, TrumpRx.gov, features drugs made by AstraZeneca, Eli Lilly, EMD Serono, Novo Nordisk and Pfizer. Additional drugs from other companies will be available in the coming months, according to the fact sheet.

"Patients purchasing directly through TrumpRx.gov will be able to see massive price reductions on 40 of the most popular and expensive branded medicines in the nation," the White House noted.

It remains to be seen to what extent the effort will help American patients, who have long faced high drug prices, particularly compared with other developed countries.

A CNN report noted that the effort has garnered mixed reviews from experts, who largely say the channel's impact will be "limited," at least initially.

Those with lower deductibles may find it more cost-effective to use their insurance, but those with high deductibles may be better off purchasing medicines through TrumpRx, the report quoted Joey Mattingly, an associate professor at the University of Utah's College of Pharmacy, as saying.
