CAIRO, Jan. 6 (Xinhua) -- Egypt fully supports the renewed negotiations between the United States and Iran mediated and hosted by Oman, the Egyptian Foreign Ministry said Friday in a statement.
There are "no military solutions" to the tensions, and the only viable path forward is through dialogue and negotiations, it said.
Egypt backs efforts aimed at reducing escalation and reaching a peaceful and sustainable settlement of the Iranian nuclear issue, it said.
A conducive environment founded on good faith and mutual respect will help reach a sustainable agreement and spare the region the risks of military escalation, it said.
The latest round of indirect talks between Tehran and Washington started earlier on Friday, with an Iranian delegation headed by Foreign Minister Seyed Abbas Araghchi, and a U.S. delegation led by U.S. president's special envoy Steve Witkoff.
A while ago, Iran's state-run IRIB TV reported that the talks ended "for now," and the two delegations may return home.
The talks came amid heightened regional tensions, especially between Washington and Tehran, featuring a recent U.S. military buildup in the Middle East and Iran's stepped-up preparations. ■
