TOKYO, Feb. 3 (Xinhua) -- Japan's key Nikkei stock index closed Tuesday at a record high, surging by over 2,000 points, as a wide range of shares were bought on Wall Street gains overnight.

The 225-issue Nikkei Stock Average advanced 2,065.48 points, or 3.92 percent, from Monday to 54,720.66. The broader Topix index finished 109.71 points, or 3.10 percent, higher at 3,645.84.

Stocks climbed across the board, led by cyclical shares such as banking and precision instrument issues that are deemed sensitive to economic fluctuations, after U.S. equities were lifted by stronger-than-expected manufacturing data in January.

Among notable gainers were heavyweight semiconductor issues such as Tokyo Electron and Advantest, as well as shares of companies that released positive earnings and forecasts, including TDK.
