MAPUTO, Feb. 3 (Xinhua) -- Mozambican President Daniel Chapo on Tuesday called for renewed national unity and patriotic values, describing the country's heroes as the foundation of peace, sovereignty and sustainable development, as the nation marked Heroes' Day.
Speaking at the Heroes' Monument in Maputo, Chapo said the sacrifice of nationalist leaders during the liberation struggle forged a collective identity that continues to guide Mozambique through current challenges.
"The lesson of unity taught by our heroes remains the secret of our victory as a people, in all fronts we face today," the president said, recalling leaders during the anti-colonial struggle.
The president underlined that Heroes' Day transcends political, ethnic, religious or cultural differences, urging Mozambicans at home and in the diaspora to draw inspiration from the values of unity, dialogue, justice and social cohesion.
He said improved security conditions have allowed the resumption of strategic economic projects, including the Mozambique LNG project in the Rovuma Basin and new local industrial initiatives.
Chapo also highlighted progress in industrialization, citing the inauguration of a graphite processing plant in Niassa province as part of broader efforts to diversify the economy and promote inclusive growth.
"The fight against terrorism goes hand in hand with development," he said, adding that Mozambique will continue investing in infrastructure, basic services and productive sectors to improve living conditions nationwide. ■
