COLOMBO, Feb. 3 (Xinhua) -- Sri Lanka's Ceylon Electricity Board (CEB) said its enforcement drive against illegal electricity use has led to the recovery of about 290,932 U.S. dollars in 2025, following investigations carried out across the country.

According to the state-owned power utility, the Special Investigations Unit detected more than 1,300 cases of unlawful electricity consumption during the year. These included widespread meter tampering as well as unauthorized electricity tapping using hooks, practices that the CEB said caused substantial financial losses to the national power system.

The CEB said suspects linked to fraudulent electricity use were arrested and prosecuted under existing laws.

The CEB said illegal electricity consumption undermines revenue, places additional strain on infrastructure, and increases operational costs. The board added that investigation and monitoring activities will continue.
