ISLAMABAD, Jan. 30 (Xinhua) -- Pakistan's counter-terrorism force killed six terrorists during an intelligence-based operation in Mianwali district of eastern Punjab province, the counter-terrorism department said on Friday.
The operation was carried out after authorities received credible information that a group of terrorists was planning attacks on police and other government institutions in the area, the department said in a statement.
When the counter-terrorism department team raided the suspected hideout, the terrorists opened fire, triggering a heavy exchange of gunfire.
As a result, six terrorists were killed, while eight others managed to escape under the cover of darkness, the statement said.
Security personnel recovered a suicide jacket, three hand grenades, a submachine gun, ammunition and explosive material from the hideout.
A search operation has been launched to track down the escaped terrorists, and the area has been cordoned off as investigations continue. ■
