Qatar launches 420 mln USD development, humanitarian projects in Lebanon

BEIRUT, Jan. 26 (Xinhua) -- Qatari Minister of State Mohammed Abdulaziz Al-Khulaifi on Monday announced here a major package of development and humanitarian initiatives to help Lebanon, totaling over 420 million U.S. dollars.

Speaking at a joint press conference with Lebanese Deputy Prime Minister Tarek Mitri in Beirut, Al-Khulaifi said that the projects, implemented through the Qatar Development Fund in coordination with Lebanese authorities, encompass multiple sectors, according to the official National News Agency.

The initiatives cover electricity infrastructure, scholarships, sports, hospital reconstruction, and support for refugee return, al-Khulaifi said, adding that they aim to enhance public services and help stabilize Lebanon.

He also reaffirmed Qatar's ongoing support for the Lebanese Armed Forces to strengthen its military capacities.

Earlier, Al-Khulaifi met with Lebanese President Joseph Aoun, who thanked Qatar for its longstanding support and highlighted the close brotherly ties between the two nations. Al-Khulaifi reaffirmed Qatar's strong commitment to Lebanon and emphasized the importance of Lebanese involvement in regional dialogues.

The Qatari minister also met with Parliament Speaker Nabih Berri to discuss regional developments and bilateral relations.
