RAMALLAH, Jan. 25 (Xinhua) -- A Palestinian man was killed by Israeli army on Sunday in the central West Bank, according to Palestinian sources.
The Palestinian General Authority for Civil Affairs said in a brief press statement that 34-year-old Ammar Hijazi was killed by Israeli army fire north of Ramallah city.
The statement did not provide further details on the circumstances of the killing but confirmed that the authority's teams are working to retrieve Hijazi's body, which is being held by Israeli forces. Hijazi was from the northern West Bank city of Nablus.
Palestinian security sources told Xinhua that Israeli soldiers opened fire on Hijazi while he was driving his vehicle in the area.
The Israeli army has not yet commented on the incident.
Meanwhile, local sources and eyewitnesses told Xinhua that Israeli settlers set fire to two vehicles and spray-painted racist slogans on early Sunday morning during an attack on the town of Atara, northwest of Ramallah.
The West Bank has seen increased violence since the Gaza war began in October 2023. According to a UN report, 240 Palestinians were killed by Israeli forces or settlers in the West Bank in 2025, including 55 children, whereas Palestinians killed 17 Israelis in the territory during the same period. ■
