ADDIS ABABA, Jan. 23 (Xinhua) -- The Peace and Security Council (PSC) of the African Union (AU) on Friday announced the restoration of Guinea to the union's family.
The move came after the council, in its 1325th meeting, reviewed Guinea's political transition and processes, the PSC said in a communique released on Friday.
"The council decides to lift the suspension of the participation of the Republic of Guinea in the activities of the AU, in line with Article 26 of the African Charter on Democracy, Elections and Governance," the communique said, adding that the council invited the West African country to immediately resume its participation in AU activities.
The council said it welcomes the positive steps taken in the implementation of the political transition roadmap in Guinea, which culminated in the successful organization of the presidential election on Dec. 28, 2025.
It also commended the Guinean people for their strong commitment to the promotion of democracy and the rule of law, through peaceful and orderly conduct of the presidential election.
Guinea was suspended from the AU in September 2021, following a military coup. ■
