KAMPALA, Jan. 21 (Xinhua) -- The newly appointed head coach of the Ugandan national men's basketball team, Goran Lojo, has said he is delighted to be in charge of the team in the FIBA World Cup qualifiers next month.

The Federation of Uganda Basketball Associations (FUBA) named Lojo as head coach of the Silverbacks on Tuesday night, who replaced American Georges Galanopoulos.

"I am delighted to be offered the opportunity to coach Uganda's men's national team, and we are going to work hard to make sure we get positive results," Lojo told Xinhua.

Uganda will open their qualifying campaign for the 2027 World Cup in Cairo, Egypt when the AfroBasket Championship for Zone 5 takes place February 26th to March 1. Uganda Silverbacks are placed in Group D alongside Angola, Mali and hosts Egypt.

The experienced Lojo is remembered for leading his native Bosnia & Herzegovina to fifth place in the 2021 Women's EuroBasket.

The Uganda national team will be eager to perform better under the guidance of an experienced coach like Lojo. Last year Uganda finished 15th in the AfroBasket tournament, which was described as a decline compared to their sixth-place finish in the 2021 edition.
