JERUSALEM, Jan. 15 (Xinhua) -- An earthquake with a preliminary magnitude of 4.2 struck Israel's southeastern Dead Sea area, the lowest point on Earth, on Thursday, according to the Geological Survey of Israel.
The tremor occurred at 9 a.m. local time (0700 GMT) and was felt in several parts of the country. The epicenter was located at a depth of 26 km in the southern Dead Sea region, at 31.1 degrees north latitude and 35.5 degrees east longitude.
Israel's national emergency service, Magen David Adom, said it received no reports of injuries and reiterated public safety guidelines. Police said officers were deployed to check roads and buildings for potential hazards. ■
