JAKARTA, Jan. 12 (Xinhua) -- When Nia Aprilia first joined a trampoline dance fitness class out of curiosity three months ago, she never imagined the exercise would become a regular part of her lifestyle or help improve her physical condition in such a short time.

The 37-year-old nurse has also noticed positive effects on her mental well-being from the activity, which features upbeat music and combines dance with bouncing movements.

"Jumping and laughing with friends is so enjoyable, especially for a working woman like me," Aprilia told Xinhua. "It helps me stay active and feel more relaxed."

At a cost of around 50,000 to 65,000 rupiah (about 3 to 4 U.S. dollars) per session, Aprilia attends trampoline dance workouts weekly.

Compared to other fitness activities gaining popularity in Indonesia, such as padel and Pilates, trampoline dance fitness is generally more affordable. Renting a padel court typically costs between 250,000 and 450,000 rupiah per hour, while a 60-minute Pilates class can cost up to 300,000 rupiah.

Poppy Christine, 49, who has been involved in introducing and developing trampoline dance fitness in Indonesia from her studio in West Java, said the activity has expanded in recent years, particularly between 2023 and 2025.

Christine, who has trained instructors for trampoline dance fitness programs, said the number of certified instructors has grown, attributing the rising interest partly to the relatively low cost and accessible nature of the workout.

"Psychologically, the jumping movements remind people of childhood play, and the dynamic routines help prevent boredom," she said.

"The routines are energetic and set to modern music, which many participants find engaging," Christine added.

While declining to disclose business figures, Christine said the growth of trampoline dance fitness has helped create job opportunities for instructors in various parts of the country.

One of them is Pujiatun, an instructor trained by Christine and based in Tangerang, on the outskirts of Jakarta, who now runs trampoline dance classes at different venues, including shopping centers.

Pujiatun began offering classes in July last year after investing in trampoline equipment and gradually expanded her schedule in response to growing interest.

"At first, I only held classes on weekends, but later added weekday sessions," she said.

On weekends, she can conduct several sessions a day, each attended by dozens of participants.

Pujiatun said she believes the activity, which can be adapted for participants of different age groups, will continue to attract interest as Indonesians look for accessible ways to stay active.

"The trampolines are designed to reduce impact, so participants generally feel more comfortable during exercise," she said.
