VILNIUS, Jan. 12 (Xinhua) -- Lithuania recorded its lowest temperature in the past two years on Sunday morning, the Lithuanian Hydrometeorological Service said, as the mercury dropped to minus 22.2 degrees Celsius in Varena, southern Lithuania, according to the Baltic News Service (BNS).

"In some southern and eastern regions, due to calm weather and clear skies, the cold snap was stronger than expected. Once again, the lowest air temperature was recorded not only this winter, but also in the last two years," the service said in a post on its Meteo.lt Facebook page.

The previous record low on Sunday morning was on Jan. 17, 2024, when temperatures fell to minus 22.6 degrees in Salcininkai.

"Although temperatures below minus 20 degrees Celsius seem very low these days, we are still far from the coldest temperature ever recorded on Jan. 11," the service said.

The country's all-time low temperature was recorded on Jan. 11, 1950, when the temperature dropped to minus 37.6 degrees in Lazdijai.
