ISLAMABAD, Jan. 11 (Xinhua) -- The death toll from a gas explosion at a wedding house in Pakistan's federal capital, Islamabad, has risen to eight, including a newlywed couple, while 11 others were injured, local authorities said on Sunday.
The explosion occurred at around 2 a.m. local time inside a residential building where a wedding ceremony was underway, triggering panic and damaging nearby structures, said Deputy Commissioner Islamabad Irfan Nawaz Memon.
"So far, 19 people trapped under the debris have been rescued," the official said, adding that the injured were shifted to the hospital for treatment.
Rescue officials said at least four houses in the surrounding area were affected by the blast.
Authorities said the exact cause of the explosion will be determined following a detailed investigation.
Chairman of the Senate of Pakistan Yusuf Raza Gilani expressed deep grief over the incident that occurred during a wedding, calling it "heart-wrenching" as celebrations turned into mourning for a family.
