MEXICO CITY, Jan. 9 (Xinhua) -- Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum on Friday underscored the importance of strengthening cooperation with Brazil to deliver benefits to both countries and their peoples.

At her daily press conference, Sheinbaum confirmed she held a phone call with Brazilian President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva to exchange views on the situation in Latin America, recent U.S. attacks in Venezuela, and existing bilateral cooperation agreements between Mexico and Brazil.

She highlighted "significant progress in some areas of work and collaboration," following a recent visit to Mexico by a Brazilian delegation of senior officials and business leaders.

Sheinbaum said that Lula formally invited her to visit Brazil in May and that she would evaluate the invitation.

The Mexican president also applauded Lula's commitment to combating gender-based violence in Brazil, proposing that Mexico's minister for women, Citlalli Hernandez Mora, work with Brazilian authorities to share experiences.

In a message posted on social media, Lula said he and Sheinbaum condemned attacks against the Venezuelan people and rejected any attempt to divide the world into spheres of influence.

Both leaders reaffirmed their commitment to defending multilateralism, respecting international law and promoting free trade.
